HPC Newsletter 1701

Dear colleagues,

We would kindly ask you to grant us 15 minutes of your time by filling out the bwHPC survey: https://evasysw.uni-stuttgart.de/evasys/online.php?p=bwhpc.

Welcome to the first Freiburg HPC newsletter in 2017. Since the last newsletter was published, the NEMO Cluster-Beirat (advisory board) has been established. Additionally, a technical advisory board was conceived to discuss practical issues with deputies of the most active NEMO workgroups. We have seen a steady increase in approved Rechenvorhaben for NEMO and the other bwForClusters. Consequently, the workload on NEMO is now quite often at 100% and jobs will get queued instead of being immediately executed.

Best wishes, your HPC team

We would kindly ask you to grant us 15 minutes of your time by filling out the bwHPC survey: https://evasysw.uni-stuttgart.de/evasys/online.php?p=bwhpc. NEMO Cluster-Beirat and NEMO technical advisory board

The first two meetings of the NEMO Cluster-Beirat (advisory board) took place on 14.12.2016 and on 08.03.2017. Following the recommendations of the first meeting, an additional NEMO TAB (*technical* advisory board) was established to discuss practical issues with deputies of the most active NEMO workgroups. The first two meetings of the NEMO TAB took place on 17.02.2017 and 03.03.2017. The main topics were related to fairshare and accounting and the upcoming NEMO extension.

NEMO status and statistics

NEMO is now quite often under full load and jobs are getting queued. While it may be inconvenient for users that their jobs do not get executed immediately, this is the desired target state for a high performance computing system.

We advise users to check the status and statistics of NEMO. For more detailed statistics on our monitoring server: https://cloud.nemo.uni-freiburg.de/user (login required). (Read more)

End of support for Matlab Distributed Compute Server (MDCS)

The state wide licence for Matlab is expiring next year (31.03.2018). There are negotiations for a renewal taking place, but the outcome is not certain. As an immediate consequence of the current situation, usage of the Matlab Distributed Compute Server (MDCS) is deprecated and only limited support is provided for legacy installations. (Read more)
